Commentary on Poem 3

The theme I am exploring in the poem is how teachers always teach students and how the students absorb their teaching. In life and in schools, the teacher always teaches us everyday and never stops until we absorb the method. But, some students just did not care what the teacher teaches and did their own way, making he teaches wasting their energy and time to teach them but they just do not absorb it.

I develop this theme by the teacher teaching them everyday almost the same thing about Tenses, Grammar and Vocabulary but there is one student who still did not care what the teacher say and always write her composition filled with errors. Hence, I develop this theme to remind all the students to tell them that their teacher are always trying very hard to make us understand and we must respect the teacher by not wasting their time as teachers came to teach us.

The effect that I would like to achieve in the poem is to allow students to know how the teachers feel by teaching us but they get nothing in return. I also want students to work harder so that all the teachers’ effort and time will not be wasted because of us.

I really hope that students will learn about this and treat teachers fairly as what they did are concern about us and teachers always wasted a lot of their energy to teach us.

Individual poem composed from Catherine Lin's Little Ironies

The Teacher
Teaching students like a machine,
Teach, teach, teach and teach.
But the words go in and always come out,
And they never show any gratitude at all.

Teaching Secondary four students English,
Grammar, Tenses and Vocabulary.
But they never take it to heart,
And their composition writing was a piece of shit!

Just like one girl,
Teaching her for four years.
But her composition get worse everyday,
Totally no hope.

Needing to sit for General Certificate of Education
In three months time,
But her composition was still full of mistakes.
Worse is, she can only write one sentence correctly.

Teaching till our faces turn blue,
But they just didn't care.
Asking her to write about "The Strangers",
In the end she writes about her father caning her.
I have no alternative but to give her a F9,
God! How i wish i could help her.

News reach the school,
That the girl jump down from the eleventh floor.
Such a shy and timid girl,
How i wish i could help her and she could share her trouble,
But... she was just a fragile girl.

Foreign Workers
We work all day long,
Hardly getting any rest.
We work all day,
Never holding any grudges.

We work, work, work and work,
Know pain but no gain.
Risking our lives
to do dangerous work
But... we have no choice

We live in low quality flats,
Sharing room with each other.
Singaporeans live in HDB flats,
one person one room.

Few months got accident,
Making some of lose our lives.
Making our family members hopeless,
And no one to support them.

Taxi Driver
No, no, no
Not even a single hello
Get me there fast, I'm in a hurry
"Move on! Quick!"
This is all they say

Yes, yes,yes!...
I'll get you there as fast as i can
What do you take me as?
Throwing up in my cab
Making it smell like a polluted dam

Maybe, perhaps, okay...
Urgent for the toilet
Rushing for "them"
Bored in the cab
While pay was pathetic
But no one cares
And I've got ten hours of my shift left to go.
